5 Male Fertility Drugs You Should Take Note

Studies into the causes of infertility reveal that only one-third of the cases are caused by female factors, another third is causes by male factors, and the last third is caused by a combination of male and female factors. Yet, given these statistics, it is surprising why drug therapy for men is not as common as fertility treatments for women. In fact, there is only about 5% of men with infertility-inducing hormonal imbalance will seek help and will take medications.
There are several male fertility drugs that are currently available. But it is not advised to take any of them without your doctor’s advice. For your reference, here are some of the most commonly prescribed male fertility drugs:

Gonadotropins
Gonadotropins are prescribed by doctors for hormonal imbalances that occur when the signals between the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the testes become disrupted, resulting in the impairment of the testes’ capacity to produce sperm. In most cases, gonadotropins have proved helpful in men with fertility problems. They are also most commonly prescribed for men who are found to have been suffering from unexplained infertility, or for those whose sperm count is exceptionally low, and whose sperm motility rate is less than 40%.

Antiestrogen Agents
While gonadotropins stimulate the release of testosterone, antiestrogen agents, on the other hand, stimulate the release of gonadotropins. The most commonly prescribed antiestrogen agents are tamoxifen and clomiphene. There is, however, a potential side effect that accompanies the intake of antiestrogen agents: they could raise testosterone to abnormal levels which, in turn, can have adverse effects of sperm production. As such, it is always advisable to monitor your testosterone levels when taking antiestrogen agents.

Bromocriptine
Excessive production of prolactin in the body is also another cause of fertility problems among men. High concentration of prolactin in the body suppresses the production of testosterone, causing the level of testosterone to decrease to abnormal levels. Doctors prescribe bromocriptine to bring down prolactin levels to normal, and also normalize the rate of sperm production. Bromocriptine requires at least four weeks of continuous intake in order to be effective. Some side effects that you should watch out for include high blood pressures, or adverse effects on some mental disorders and liver conditions.

Testosterone
Hypogonadism is a condition characterized by low levels of testosterone production. To treat this condition, doctors sometimes prescribe synthetic testosterone, which imitate the actions and reactions of natural testosterone. This medication is available in pills, injectables or patches.

Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormones (LH-RH)
LH-RH drugs are generally prescribed for conditions where the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus are inactive and do not produce as much hormones that the body needs to enable it to procreate. They are often administered as a general medication to boost the activity of these crucial glands. Some side effects that you should keep an eye on are increased risks for infection and clotting.

When it comes to male fertility drugs, we can never overemphasize the need to consult your doctor, who will necessarily know which medication is best for you, given your symptoms and conditions.
