What Are The Available Treatments For Male Infertility Besides Taking Drugs?

According to medical reports, at least half of infertility problems in men are treatable in order to make conception a possibility. There are three general approaches in treating male infertility, these include: drug therapy, assisted reproduction and surgery. This article will focus on the 2 latter treatments for male infertility: assisted reproduction and surgery.

Assisted reproduction is a type of treatment for male infertility that involves procedures in improving erectile dysfunctions, obtain sperm, induce ejaculation and inseminate an egg.

Electroejaculation – neurological dysfunctions can disrupt the production of ejaculation. This can be corrected through a procedure called electroejaculation, wherein an electrical rectal probe is used to create a current that would stimulate the nerves and thereby, induce ejaculation.

As a result, the semen will dribble out through the urethra and will be gathered. Also associated with the procedure is a process called retrograde ejaculation wherein sodium carbonated is orally taken a day before in order to make the pH of the urine basic and non-detrimental to the sperm.

Men who have undergone orchiectomy or testis removal, those with spinal cord injuries and those who have undergone RPLND or retroperitoneal lymph node dissection are the best candidates for an electroejaculation procedure.

Sperm retrieval – this treatment for male infertility is used in cases of azoospermia. Azoospermia is a case wherein there is a case of inadequate sperm production, brought about by whether obstruction, failed vasectomy reversal or the congenital absence of the vas deferens.

The process involves the use of a technique called MESA or Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration, wherein a surgeon creates an incision in the male scrotum and collects sperm from the epididymis. The epididymis is the elongated, coiled channel that provides for the maturation, storage and passage of the male sperm coming from the testes.

There is also a similar procedure called PESA or Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration, also called fine needle aspiration. However, this procedure does not involve microsurgery.

Sperm Washing – this method involves the isolation and the preparation of the healthiest sperm for insemination. The sperm and the medium for washing are centrifuged during the procedure and are repeated if necessary.

The method separates the white blood cells and prostaglandins from the sperm so that mobility is not hindered. The process also concentrates sperm in the semen, thereby increasing the possibility for conception.

GIFT or Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer – this method is suggested in couples who are experiencing unexplained fertility problems but have normal reproductive anatomies. The procedure involves the combination of mature eggs and he prepared sperm in a syringe and is injected into the woman’s fallopian tube using laparoscopy.

Surgery can also be performed to address the issue of male infertility. Surgical procedures in such cases focus in treating the obstructions in the reproductive tract and varicocele. There is a microsurgical procedure that corrects the barriers found in the coiled tube which attaches the testes to the vas deferens or the epididymis. This procedure is called vasoepididymostomy.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), cysts, tubal closures or atresia are also some of the factors that could lead to obstructions in the reproductive tract. Increased sperm count can be achieved through a procedure called varicocelectomy, wherein the varicocele is removed from the testes.
